South Carolina Governor Appoints Capt. Monty Coats to SEARCH Membership
SEARCH is pleased to welcome a new gubernatorial appointee to our Membership Group, representing the State of South Carolina: Captain Charles M. (Monty) Coats Jr., Director of Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS), South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Capt. Coats to the SEARCH Membership on September 12, 2019.
Capt. Coats replaces Major Jennie Temple, who served as South Carolina’s SEARCH Member since 2015 and was elected to several terms on the SEARCH Board of Directors.
The SLED CJIS unit is responsible for operating and maintaining the central statewide crime information center, which conducts and disseminates crime analysis information and provides criminal identification and records information to state and local agencies and the FBI. The unit also assists citizens who need background checks conducted for employment, licensing, adoption and other reasons. The center is comprised of the Uniform Crime Reports Section, the Central Records Repository, and the CJIs Training UnitThe SEARCH Membership Group, which governs SEARCH, is comprised of one gubernatorial appointee from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories, as well as eight at-large appointees selected by SEARCH’s Chair. This national body of state-level professionals is widely representative of the various disciplines within the justice system, and many are responsible for operational decisions and policymaking concerning the management of criminal justice.
