SEARCH Selects David Roberts as New Executive Director
SEARCH Chair Brad Truitt is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. David J. Roberts as the organization’s new Executive Director, effective December 1, 2017. In Mr. Roberts’ 37-year career supporting justice information technology, he has worked for state and federal governments, national non-profit organizations, and the private sector.
The SEARCH Board of Directors unanimously selected Mr. Roberts for the position following an extensive national search, and the full SEARCH Membership Group affirmed the appointment.
“Dave brings many years of experience working in the justice community and previously served for 17 years as SEARCH Deputy Executive Director,” said Chair Truitt. “He is a strategic and proactive leader in areas important to SEARCH—including the management and sharing of justice information, IT policy, planning and implementation, and standards development. I am confident SEARCH will thrive under his direction.”
Mr. Roberts currently holds dual positions:
Mr. Roberts will be the sixth Executive Director in SEARCH’s history since its incorporation in 1974. Past Executive Directors were:
- Director for National Crime Statistics Exchange (NCS-X) Technical Assistance and Outreach at the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, a position he has held since March 2016, and
- Senior Program Manager of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Technology Center since 2010, where he was principal author of the IACP Technology Policy Framework.

Mr. Roberts began his career in 1980 as Director of the Center for Criminal Justice Research in the Wyoming Attorney General’s Office. From 1986–2002, he was Deputy Executive Director of SEARCH, where he directed multiple national projects in systems, technology, research and statistics; directed national conferences and symposia; and authored foundational documents in justice information sharing. He has also directed global justice and public safety initiatives in the private sector.
As Executive Director, Mr. Roberts will lead SEARCH staff in delivering programs and services to justice and public safety organizations across the United States; support the SEARCH Membership Group in achieving corporate goals and objectives; and represent SEARCH before various branches and levels of government and partner organizations. Mr. Roberts will be based in Washington, DC.
Mr. Roberts will take over from Interim Executive Director Timothy M. Lott, who has led SEARCH staff since May 2017. Mr. Lott will continue to serve as SEARCH’s Director of High-Tech Crime Training Services and Director of Operations.“I am thrilled and honored to return to SEARCH after so many years.
