Melissa Nee Joins SEARCH as Government Affairs Specialist

Ms. Melissa J. Nee joined SEARCH as a Government Affairs Specialist effective July 15, 2015.

In this position, Ms. Nee will support SEARCH’s liaison efforts on issues that impact the states and the justice community nationally, including information sharing, public safety and homeland security.

She will communicate and work with Federal, State, and local organizations, peer associations, the Administration, and Congress on policy, legislative, regulatory, and related activities of the Federal and State governments. This includes providing SEARCH Members with timely information about pending Federal legislation and the Federal appropriations process, and educating others on SEARCH issues and policies of interest. She will also develop position, policy, and advocacy briefing documents, resolutions, and white papers to help educate and provide outreach to key decision-makers.

We are thrilled to have Melissa join our government affairs team. Melissa brings a great deal of experience working on Capitol Hill and with the Administration on law enforcement matters. SEARCH will benefit from her knowledge and expertise and the many relationships she has built in Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining SEARCH, Ms. Nee was Director of Legislative Affairs for the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) for two years. She advocated for programs and legislation to support the law enforcement community, communicating regularly with congressional staff and the offices of the Vice President and U.S. Attorney General and collaborating with peer organizations. She also developed legislative strategies, drafted testimony, and assembled information papers for NAPO leadership, and coordinated outreach efforts on Capitol Hill.

From 2011–2013, Ms. Nee worked for the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the Department of Defense’s lead agency for the execution of security cooperation programs. There, she was a Security Cooperation Program Analyst for the Programs Directorate, creating standard operating procedures for DoD disaster relief activities and assisting with the budget process for humanitarian, disaster assistance, and civic aid funds. She also served as Country Program Director for the Balkan Region and as Assistant Country Program Director for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. From 2009–2011, she was an Assistant Program Manager in the International Affairs Division of the U.S. Air Force Office of the General Counsel (GC).

Ms. Nee is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She is a master’s degree candidate in Political Science from Virginia Tech.
