Social Network Investigations

Introduction to Social Networking Investigations: There are over 200 active social networking sites on the Internet. During this block, students get an overview of social networking websites and how these websites can be useful to investigations. Students learn about two predominate sites—Facebook and Twitter—in detail. 

Introduction to Social Networking Investigations – Myspace Specific: During this block, students get an overview of social networking websites and how these websites can be useful to investigations—with an in-depth review of Myspace. Students create a “searching account” and learn how this account will be useful for future investigations. Once the account is created, students learn how to effectively search Myspace using the basic search features integrated into the site, as well as advanced searching using Google Advanced Operators and the SEARCH Social Networking Custom Search Engine. This block also presents and demonstrates tools and methods to capture profiles for evidentiary purposes. 

Introduction to Social Networking Investigations – Facebook Specific: During this block, students get an overview of social networking websites and how these websites can be useful to investigations—with an in-depth review of Facebook. Students create a “searching account” and learn how this account will be useful for future investigations. Once the account is created, students learn how to effectively search Facebook using the integrated search features. The Facebook Visualizer tool is introduced and students learn how to create a visual representation of people connected on Facebook. This block also presents and demonstrates tools and methods to capture profiles for evidentiary purposes. 

Introduction to Social Networking Website Investigations: This workshop, designed for beginners, provides students with an overview of social networking websites and how they are useful to investigations. Students also learn how to set up an investigative social networking account to search for information. This workshop teaches participants how to effectively search social networking websites (predominately Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter) using Google Advanced Operators. This workshop also covers techniques on capturing profiles for evidentiary purposes, and well as mapping tools for friend networks in both Myspace and Facebook.
