Successful 2006 Symposium on Justice and Public Safety Information Sharing The 2006 Symposium on Justice and Public Safety Information Sharing: Effective Decisionmaking for a Safer America was held March 13-15, 2006, at the Grand Hyatt, Washington, D.C.

More than 800 justice and public safety practitioners attended. The Symposium featured more than 36 plenary and panel sessions, and 90 speakers representing practitioners, policymakers, technologists, managers, and subject matter experts from throughout the nation and around the world. The Symposium addressed best practices associated with Planning, Analysis, Implementation and Technology for information sharing. Featured speakers and sessions included:

  • Keynotes
    U.S. Department of Justice Acting Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty
    U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff


  • Federal initiatives and their impact on state and local information sharing activities were explored during a plenary session with the
    • Chair of the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative
    • Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice
    • Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Department of Justice
    • Chief Intelligence Officer for the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Discussions of Intelligence Fusion Center development included highly placed representatives of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Department of Homeland Security and leaders of Fusion Center operations in New York and Massachusetts


  • John Suffolk, Director General of the Criminal Justice Information Technology (CJIT) office in the United Kingdom's Luncheon Keynote Presentation—A Global Perspective on Information Sharing: The U.K. Experience—profiling their £2.2 Billion Joined-Up Justice initiative was informative and entertaining.


  • Mr. George Foresman, newly appointed and Senate confirmed Undersecretary for Preparedness, Department of Homeland Security, moderated a roundtable of Homeland Security Directors from Kentucky, California, Texas and Arizona


  • Eleven Case Study Sessions explored cutting-edge justice and public safety information sharing activities and lessons learned in: New Jersey, Maricopa County, Arizona, Missouri, Wisconsin, Native American Tribal Communities, Nlets -the International Justice and Public Safety Information Sharing Network, FBI National Data Exchange (N-DEx), Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ohio and California


  • Pre-conference workshops were held on March 12, focusing on three key areas in information sharing: 1) Effective planning and Performance management; 2) Assessing and protecting privacy in the information age; and 3) Information exchange standards and technology.
