The eagerly anticipated debut issue of Public Safety IT, a new magazine from the publishers of LAW and ORDER, Police Fleet Manager, and Tactical Response is now available. The new bi-monthly publication focuses on information, communication and identification technologies in the justice, public safety, and homeland security fields.

Former SEARCH Deputy Executive Director Dave Roberts is the Editorial Director of Public Safety IT. “Our editorial content and topical focus is informed and guided by an Advisory Board of subject matter experts, who are leaders in government and industry, and active players in key disciplines including law enforcement, homeland security, information sharing, the judiciary, and solution providers,” Mr. Roberts noted, “We’re fortunate to have [SEARCH Deputy Executive Director] Kelly Harris on the Board and I’d like to thank her for her insight and support in bringing this new publication to the field.”

“As the regular feature columns are established, SEARCH will have opportunities to contribute critical articles in a variety of areas,” said Ms. Harris. “Public Safety IT is a much-needed resource for everyone in the justice and public safety arena.”

SEARCH Director of Public Safety Dan Hawkins contributed to the premier issue of the publication with an article on tactical interoperable communications planning efforts ongoing nationwide (see page 10), reflecting significant work that SEARCH has undertaken throughout 2006. Mr. Hawkins’ article lays the foundation for the January-February 2007 issue of the publication, which will focus on public safety communications and interoperability. In addition, Mr. Hawkins will regularly contribute to the Communications and Interoperability recurring column of the publication.

Other articles in the premier issue discuss the role of intelligence information sharing and the emergence of intelligence fusion centers (written by former SEARCH Member Ken Bouche), technologies that support secure border initiatives, and the ongoing development of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential—critical technologies in America’s efforts to secure its borders and ports.
