Kirk D. Thompson
On September 1, 2011, the Kansas Senate confirmed the appointment of Mr. Kirk D. Thompson as Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI). Mr. Thompson has served almost 30 years at the KBI, starting as a field agent and eventually rising to associate director. From 2008, he served as a captain at the Topeka Police Department, where he headed the Professional Standards Unit.

Mr. Thompson served as the Kansas representative to the SEARCH Membership Group from 2004-2007.

The KBI is the principal criminal investigation agency for the State of Kansas. It operates the state's criminal forensic laboratories, manages public safety information databases, and investigates crimes throughout the state. The KBI is structured as a division of the Office of the Attorney General.
