A recent election and SEARCH Member retirements have resulted in a new roster for SEARCH's Board of Directors. The 15-member Board, elected by the full Membership Group, provides general oversight and translates corporate goals and objectives into program directives and operating policies.
The Board election was held November 18, 2009, during SEARCH's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. At that election:
|New Hampshire Member Jeffrey Kellett, Chief Administrator, Criminal Records Unit, New Hampshire State Police, was re-elected to a two-year term. He has been a SEARCH Member since March 2005, and was first elected to the Board in 2007.
|Indiana Member, Major Doug Shelton, Records Division, Indiana State Police, was elected to his first two-year term. Major Shelton has been a SEARCH Member since January 2007. (Earlier this year, he had taken over a Board position vacated due to the retirement of former Nevada Member P.K. O'Neill. That term expired November 18, and Major Shelton was elected to the Board in his own right.)
|Wisconsin Member David Steingraber, Executive Director, Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance, was re-elected to a two-year term. He has been a SEARCH Member since April 2003, and was first elected to the Board in 2007.
|North Dakota Member Judy Volk, Information Services Manager, North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Office of Attorney General, was elected to her first term on the Board. She was appointed to the SEARCH Membership Group in April 2005.
|At-Large Member Robert Wessels, County Criminal Courts Manager, Criminal Courts at Law, Harris County (Texas) Court Administrator's Office, was re-elected to another two-year term. Mr. Wessels has served on the SEARCH Membership since March 2001, and has served on the Board for a number of terms since that time.|
Meanwhile, the Board welcomed another new member, who is fulfilling the term of former Director and New York Member Dan Foro, who retired recently:
|Mr. Karl W. Wilmes, Manager, Program Support Unit, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, a SEARCH Member since September 2005. He will serve the remainder of Mr. Foro's term, which expires in July 2010.
Continuing to serve terms on the Board, which are set to expire in July 2010, are:
- Chairman Francis X. (Paco) Aumand III, Vermont
- Vice Chairman Captain Thomas W. Turner, Virginia
- Lieutenant Colonel Brad Bates, Kentucky
- Ms. Diane Sherman, Michigan
- Mr. Brad Truitt, Tennessee
- Mr. Mike Lesko, Texas
- Dr. Al Blumstein, At-Large
- Dr. Janet Mullings, At-Large
The 15th position on the Board of Directors, to be filled by an At-Large appointee, is currently vacant.
"On behalf of all SEARCH Members and Staff, I congratulate and welcome our new and returning Board Members, and look forward to their leadership as we tackle the challenges ahead," said Mr. Ronald P. Hawley, SEARCH Executive Director.
SEARCH is governed by a Membership Group comprised of one gubernatorial appointee from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as eight at-large appointees selected by SEARCH's Chair. Members are primarily state-level justice officials responsible for operational decisions and policymaking concerning the management of criminal justice information, particularly criminal history information.
