IT Security-Final Tech Guide in Series Available

  Back

The final Law Enforcement Tech Guide prepared by SEARCH and published by the COPS Office was issued earlier this year. The Tech Guides are part of a five-guide series that dates back to 2002 with the publication of the original Law Enforcement Tech Guide: How to plan, purchase, and manage technology (successfully!). A Tech Guide on small and rural police agencies was published in 2005, and Tech Guides on communications interoperability and creating performance measures were recently published.

The Law Enforcement Tech Guide for Information Technology Security: How to Assess Risk and Establish Effective Policies provides strategies, best practices, recommendations, and ideas for developing and implementing IT security policies. It offers a straight-forward approach to help law enforcement agencies through an often complex process and provides a framework to gauge the performance and effectiveness of these policies.

This Tech Guide is intended to be used with the SEARCH IT Security Self- and Risk-Assessment Tool, a Microsoft Excel 2003 spreadsheet that guides agencies through a detailed assessment of their agency's IT system in three categories: Management, Organizational, and Technical. The spreadsheet is also available for download at www.search.org/programs/safety/techguides/.

SEARCH staff Kelly J. Harris, Deputy Executive Director, and Todd Shipley, Training Services Director, wrote this Tech Guide.

All five Tech Guides are available to view or download at SEARCH's website at www.search.org/programs/safety/tech-guide.asp or from the COPS website at www.cops.usdoj.gov. Orders for hard copies are made on the COPS site as well.
