Hawkins Appointed to SAFECOM's Baseline Working Group

Mr. Dan Hawkins, SEARCH Public Safety Technologies Program Manager, has been selected as a member of the SAFECOM Program's Baseline Working Group. SAFECOM is managed by the Department of Homeland Security and is the umbrella program that oversees all initiatives and projects related to public safety communications and interoperability. The Baseline Working Group is a crucial part of SAFECOM's effort to survey and analyze the current state of public safety and interoperability communications nationwide.

"A nationwide, baseline measurement of communications interoperability is critical to our understanding of how well public safety agencies are able to work together and where improvements are needed. Today, policy leaders and decision makers hear a great deal about issues, but with little detail to put it into context with other pressing matters," said Mr. Hawkins. "We're hopeful that this assessment will provide hard and fast details, while also improving our understanding of just what it means to say a region is or isn't interoperable."

According to the SAFECOM Program Management Office, The Baseline Working Group of public safety practitioners from law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, and elected and appointed officials will provide valuable input to the processes and deliverables from this study.
