COPS Office Releases 2nd Edition of Communications Interop Tech Guide

Building a voice or data communications system that enables public safety to communicate with each other and share information within and across jurisdictions and disciplines—whether during mission-critical events or in daily operations—is a complex and costly effort. 

To help organizations better tackle interoperable communications projects, SEARCH first developed the Law Enforcement Tech Guide for Communications Interoperability: A Guide for Interagency Communications Projects in 2006. We are pleased to announce the August 2013 publication of a revised and updated second edition, which is available from the U.S.

New SEARCH Members Appointed in New York, Oklahoma and Maine

SEARCH is pleased to announce three new appointments to the SEARCH Membership Group:

  • New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo appointed Mr. Joseph N. Morrissey to be the state’s representative on the SEARCH Membership Group, effective June 17, 2013. Mr. Morrissey works within the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as Director of the Office of Criminal Justice Operations. The DCJS is a multi-function criminal justice support agency. Housed in the Division are the state’s criminal history fingerprint files.

Recent Elections Result in Changes to SEARCH Board of Directors Roster

During SEARCH’s recent annual Membership Group meeting held July 22-25, 2013, in Sacramento, California, SEARCH Members held elections for the Board of Directors.

The 15-member Board governs the operations of SEARCH on behalf of the Membership. Elections are held every year for staggered 2-year terms; 11 of the Board Members are SEARCH Members appointed by the governor of their respective state, while 4 are At-Large Members appointed by the SEARCH Chair.

SEARCH ISP Director Achieves ScrumMaster® Certification

Andrew Owen

Managing complex software development projects is a challenging task—but SEARCH Information Sharing Programs Director Andrew Owen has learned a new, agile way to approach this challenge by becoming a Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM).

Scrum is a framework for effective team collaboration on complex projects. It uses a simple but powerful set of principles and practices that help teams deliver products in short cycles, enabling fast feedback, continual improvement, and rapid adaptation to change.

Scrum has predominantly been used for software development projects, but works well for any complex, innovative scope of work.

The evening of July 23, Members, Staff and Guests took a break from the business of the 2013 SEARCH Annual Meeting to enjoy a reception at the Sheraton Grand Sacramento recognizing the two recipients of SEARCH’s annual awards: The O.J. Hawkins Award, a practitioner honor that went to retired SEARCH Executive Director Ronald P. Hawley, and the Cooper Meritorious Service Award, a Membership honor that went to Texas justice official Robert Wessels.
